more microfic

More bleak microfic. I'm not really in this bad a mood - I had some
weird dreams that kicked off some odd chains of thought.

He shivered slightly, digging his hands deeper into the pockets of his
cheap coat. The wind was strong, and unusually cold for October. He
hadn't wanted to bring heavy, warm clothes with him, and hadn't
expected to be waiting outside this long. He was still young enough
to think that looking cool was more important than feeling the cold.

Neither one of them had noticed the other when they had gotten in
line. If they had, one of them probably would have walked away. The
line had gotten longer quickly, though, so when he turned and saw her,
neither one was willing to go to the back of the line to wait longer
in the cold. In her fishnet stockings, she was shivering as much as
he was.

When he saw her face, he stopped, and went perfectly still. She
turned, looked up at him and flushed.

"Uh, hey," she said, glancing away.

"Hey." he replied, his face blank.

"Look... I'm sorry I never called back, ok?" She pulled away, back
against the rusted metal fence. "I just... I couldn't. "

He shook his head slowly, the strong wind blowing tangles of brown
into his eyes. "You never... you never told me why. I mean, I
figured it out - I'm not stupid. You didn't return my calls, you
walked away from me in the halls. I know it's over. I just... I
don't know what I did wrong. What did I do to hurt you so much?"

The wind died for just a moment, fragments of dust and dried leaves
tumbling to the ground. She looked up and met his eyes.

"You fell in love with me. That's not an easy thing to forgive." Security
motioned her over to get searched by a bored looking woman. A tall,
earnest looking man with a brushcut motioned him over and frisked
him. She went into the club, and vanished into the crowd.

I think I'm all tapped out for the moment, I'm afraid. I'll take a nap at lunch and see if my subconscious can dredge up some more angst for me to write about.
